The 2010 Winter Olympics begin next week and with another round of games comes another argument. It seems to arise every four years, and never seems to be resolved. Which olympics games is superior...Summer or Winter?
There are those out there who feel that the Winter games are better...
Why the Winter Olympics are better
And there are those that prefer the Summer games...
Why the Summer Olympics are better
So, which side are you on and why? If you prefer the Summer, why are they superior? If you like the Winter, what makes the snow and the ice so special? (PART I due by 2/11 ; PART II due by 2/14)

I think that the Summer Olympics are the better ones because more people actually pay attention to it and most people like the activities. All of the sports that go on are awesome and they always interesting. Also they earn many medals that break records and cause controversy. An example of this is Michael Phelps breaking the record number gold medals. To me the Summer Olympics are amazing because of the people in them. In the Winter Olympics dont know anyone in them so I dont really care.
ReplyDeleteI think that the Summer Olympics are better than than the Winter Olympics. I am only wanting to watch the hockey finals for the winter Olympics. While during the Summer Olympics, i watch the Basketball, Track, Baseball, and others. The Summer Olympics also get more advertisement. They are more broadcast and they are more watched and anticipated than the Winter Olympics.
ReplyDeletei agree with what Gavin said. I agree that the Summer Olympics are better. He is right when he says that the sports are more played around the world. Because not everywhere can you snow board but you can play soccer anywhere. Michael Phelps has made the Summer Olympics better than the Winter Olympics because he broke more records and got a lot of publicity. I know more people in the Summer Olympics than i do in the Winter Ones.
ReplyDeleteThe summer olympics is better than the winter olympics for one reason, GYMNASTICS. quite possibly the greatest sport ever invented. no sport on this planet even comes close to the greatness that is GYMNASTICS. just the athleticism of the girls who do GYMNASTICS is just amazing. The winter olympics is just plain boring. i mean, skating, come on. the only spoet that is half as fun as GYMNASTICS is curling. the winter olympics has shaun white, but the summer olympics has shawn johnson and nastia liukin. enough said.
ReplyDeleteI think that the summer olympics are definitely better. Since it is broadcast during the summer, more people will be able to watch it, instead of those who go to school during the day who would not be able to watch it. I also think that the summer olympics have always seemed like a bigger deal. The summer olympics also has a larger variety of sports. There are even special places where the summer olympics take place. Even though special places are picked for the winter olympics too, it seems that the countries that are picked feel more honored to hold the summer olympics.
ReplyDeleteI think the summer olympics are better than the winter olympics. Basketball is the most entertaining olympic sport, and it is obviously a summer sport. There is also soccer and tennis to watch which are both very competitive sports around the world. Most people in America would rather watch basketball and soccer than luge and curling.
ReplyDeleteI have to agree with Gavin. A lot of athletes are more well-known in the summer olympics than in the winter olympics. More athletes come out of the summer olympics with a record-breaking ammount of gold medals, and they often end up becoming huge celebrities. Michael Phelps is an excellent example of this. He won so many gold medals at the summer games that he is now a celebrity and much looked up to role model.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Gavin's opinion that the summer olympics are better than the winter. The sports in the summer olympics are a lot more popular in America than those in the winter olympics. I would much rather watch Michael Phelps go for 8 gold medals and watch Lebron and Kobe play together than I would want to watch speed skating, snowboarding, skiing, or cross country skiing.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Taylor that the summer olympics are bettter. A lot more people have free time to watch the games during the summer than in the winter. Also the summer sports are overall more interesting. I obviously enjoy watching Mike Krzyzewski coach the redeem team than shaun white snowboardn or lindsey vonn ski. The summer olympics are better than the winter olympics by far.
ReplyDeleteI think that definitely the summer olympics are far more entertaining and the events in them get the people of the world more excited. The winter olympics kind of have tough competition because they follow up the super bowl so i think that most people over look the winter olympics and forget about them because of all of the hype surrounding the super bowl. The summer olympics most people are off school, they have the more popular sports like basketball, swimming, track and field, and beach volleyball. People would much rather stuff in the pool or on the beach, rather than snowy, cold weather. If you look back on the recent history of the olympics, most of the most memorable moments in sports history have happened in the summer olympics. The Dream team, the Redeem Team, Usain Bolts boastful finish, and of course Michael Phelps history making olympics in the pool. All of these are reasons why the summer olympics will always be more popular than the winter olympics.
ReplyDeleteI agree with clayton about how we would much rather see Kobe and LeBron win a gold medal than see Shaun White win a gold medal. I think a major reason why the summer olympics are so much more popular because there are many more sports that Americans relate to and enjoy watching, like basketball.
ReplyDeleteI also have to agree with Connor. Although this may be a different way to approach the argument, the summer olympics does offer much more attractive sports to watch so to say. The summer olympics offers gymnastics, beach volleyball, synchronized diving, and swimming. I know a dude would much rather see shaun johnson do some gymnastics then watch a woman skier or snowboarder wrapped up in winter clothing.
ReplyDeleteI think that the Summer Olympics are superior to the Winter Olympics. Most of the sports that are included in the Summer Olympics are the sports that most people play and watch. There are some sports that are in the Winter Olympics that people watch and enjoy. However, for the most part, people can relate more to the events in the Summer Olympics. Another thing that is popular with the Summer Olympics is the athletes. Yes, the Winter Olympics has a lot of well-known athletes too, but for the most part people know Summer Olympic athletes more. Lastly, I think that the media pays more attention to the Summer Olympics. This allows the people to become more excited about the olympics and make them want to watch it.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Taylor. The Summer Olympics take place in the summer. People have more time to watch the Olympics in the summer because they don't have to focus on homework or other sporting activities. Also, the variety of sports in the Summer olympics is a lot broader, and the names of the sports or more known. People know more about the athletes and the sports in the Summer Olympics rather than the Winter Olympics.
ReplyDeleteI also agree with Connor. People watch the sports that they enjoy. The Summer Olympics offer a lot of sports that people participate in. Not that people don't snowboard or ice-skate. However, most people do these activities for fun and not competitively. People are more inclined to watch the sports they play, and I feel that the Summer Olympics offer more variety of sports that people play competitively.
ReplyDeleteI think the Summer Olympics are better, because no one wants to watch a sport they've never played, or that isn't already on t.v, and watched. People who watch sports year round like soccer, basketball, etc. will more than likely watch the Summer Olympics. You can't watch skiing and snowboarding as much as you can basketball and soccer. I think more of us can relate to the Summer Olympics than the Winter Olympics.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Joey, the winter Olympics are around the Superbowl, and there is a lot going on then. Whereas the summer Olympics everyone isn't in school, and there isn't much else to watch, sports-wise. Also most of the record breaking moments in the Olympics do occur in the summer.
ReplyDeleteI also agree with Taylor, everyone watches the summer Olympics, no one really talks about the winter Olympics as much as they do the summer Olympics. Also people do feel much more honored to have their cities chosen to host the summer Olympics. Everyone isn't as busy in the summer as they are in the winter.
ReplyDeleteOh contrare kids, I think that the WIINTER OLYMPICS are way more Superior than the weak SUMMER OLYMPICS. The winter olympics are true competitive sports that require actual skill. Just think, ok everyone can do the skills performed in the summer olympics, but can those people do the skills performed in the winter olympics? No, because everyone can withstand in the summer but not the winter. The winter olympics are a true test of an athletes ability, because your not only challenging their skill, but more importantly their mental toughness. Only the best of the athletes can handle these types of games. The Winter Olympics challenge the athletes ability in sports, and adds bad weather conditions which makes them and the over all games Superior.
ReplyDeleteI think the summer olympics are better because they are more interesting. The summer olympics have better sport events and more people seem to enjoy them a lot more. They catch people enterest. People talk more about the summer olympics than the winter olympics, maybe because poeple are more active around the summer time and like watching them to get them in the mood of summer. Rather in the winter olympics all people can do is watch instead of play the sports. Plus people have more time to watch the summer olympics than the winter olympics.
ReplyDeletemackenzie that is one of the most stupidest comments i have ever heard in my life. the winter olympics is just boring. wheres the basketball, GYMNASTICS, beach volleyball, track, or GYMNASTICS? nobody wants to watch figure skating over boxing. i mean come on. not only is the summer olympics more interesting but it has sports that people actually watch. my friends don't come up to me and say "hey do you wanna go play figure skating?" NO!!!! they say "hey do you want to go play basketball? i would prefer to watch sports that i have actually heard of.
ReplyDeletei agree completely with molly. shes from a gymnastics family so shes cool. the summer Olympics is more fun. no body wants to watch sports in the snow. they prefer to watch beach volleyball where the girls wear spandex and bikinis. i know thats awkward and weird but its true.
ReplyDeletecharlie kolisek is standing right next to me and he told me to tell everyone that snowboarding is the shiz/truth.
ReplyDeleteI belive that that summer olymics are better than the winter olympics. I beleive this because in america the summer olympics are watched more than the winter and most people that play sports in america are ethier indoors or they play the sports during a warmer period of year.
ReplyDeleteI agree with margret because she is right beccause no one will understand a sport they have never seen before for example curling i have no idea how you play that game and what the rules are so i tend to not watch it during the olympics.
ReplyDeletei agree with joey because the winter olympics are followed by the super bowl it makes it much more difficult especially in america because of the super bowl and all the hype that goes along with the super bowl. most people in america i belive overlook the winter olympics.
ReplyDeleteI disagree with Mackenzie. All sports are competitive, no matter what sport it is. Winter and summer are both harsh seasons; one is not more harsh than the other. With that being said, the sports are not harder to train for in winter olympics than they are in the summer. No one can say that a sport is more competitive or is harder to train for unless they have participated and trained for that sport. I don't believe that there is really a true answer to the question of "summer olympics vs. winter olympics" because it is a matter of opinion, whether one enjoys summer or winter more.
ReplyDeleteWith all of these olympic season sports appearing, the battle between the Summer and Winter Olympics is the talk this year. In my opinion, neither of the sports are superior to the other. There may be some athletes that grew up in a warm place and compete in the Winter Olympics and vice versa. The sports are all competitive.
ReplyDeleteI disagree with Mackenzie. The reason I do is because some of the sports that are performed in the Winter are not performed in the Summer. It's hard to see which sport or Olympic Season is better than the other. It's like comparing two things that are completely different.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Clayton though. Some of the sports are more interesting to see during the Summer. The snow can seem to be the same exact thing over and over again. If you watch, some things can be more exciting depending on the weather which is able to change the level the athlete can perform at. It's mainly just a level of personal taste.
ReplyDeleteWow! Look at all this chalk...there's dust everywhere. BORING...everybody agreeing with each other. What's next, hold hands and sing "Kum-Ba-Yah?" I'll be the stick that stirs the coffee a bit...
ReplyDeleteThe WINTER Olympics are superior and it's not even close. The events are faster, more exciting all around, and they are better to wath on TV. The Summer Olympics give you the ordinary...the everyday. Any one of us could go out and run around a track, play basketball, even go do a summersault in the front yard. YAWN! Show me something exciting. Look at the Winter events... hockey, slalom skiing, bobsled...How many of these are any of you doing on a daily basis? Not to mention, these are things that I WANT to watch at home...it's cold out there!
Both summer and winder olympics are great, but i'm going to say the winter olympics are better. With colder weather conditions, and even more deadly events. Big news for today is the death of the luger from the Republic of Georgia. He died in training, not even the event because he slid out of the sled at 90 miles an hour and crashed into a steel beam. Clearly the conditions of winter olympics are more dangerous.
ReplyDeleteI disagree with Taylor that summer olympics are better because people have more time to watch them. What about the people who work? most people work in the summer and that even includes teachers who acquire summer jobs. Also, when the weather is 85 and sunny, i don't want to be sitting inside watching tv even if its michael phelps set another record.
ReplyDeleteI disagree with you Mr. Strykowski. The winter olympics aren't nearly as popular as the summer olympics. The summer olympics is more exciting because these sports are something that people can play at the time. Plus more people have time to watch the summer olympics because kids and teens aren't in school.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Conner because the summer sports are so much more interesting than the winter sports selection. It's way more exciting and more competitive. More people play the sports that are in the summer olympics than the sports that are in the winter olympics which would make the summer olympics so much more popular and so much more interesting.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Clayton on the fact that all of the Summer Olympics events are more interesting and more watched by Americans. In America we get bored easily and the Summer Olymipics keeps are attention for the entire event. Im already bored of the Winter Games and its about two days into them.
ReplyDeleteI disagree with Mr. Strykowski that the Winter Games are just as popular. Of all of the people I have asked, almost no one cares about them. Most people that do care only think about one event like bobsledding. I even like the bobsledding part a bit but no one in their right mind cares about things like ice skating and cross country skiing. Those things are boring and a waste of time.
ReplyDeleteI like the summer olympics better. The summer olympics contain the sports that are most popular in the U.S. such as basketball and baseball. Also the summer olympics are alot more interesting and watched by Americans. It all depends on which sports you favor. For me, I like basketball so I enjoy the summer olympics more.
ReplyDeleteI agree with clayton. I also think that basketball and baseball are alot more interesting to watch then luge and snowboarding. It's very interesting to watch the best basketball athletes of the U.S. compete with the best in the world.
ReplyDeleteI disagree with Mr. Strykowski that the Winter Games are just as popular as the Summer games. The summer games contain the sporting events that Americans watch year around such as basketball and baseball.
ReplyDeleteFYI,
ReplyDeleteI never said anything about POPULAR. I said that they are superior. Popular and superior are VERY different things.
I believe that the summer olympics are superior. I believe this because I enjoy the sports more. I always enjoy watching the USA basketball team go for gold and I also like to watch swimming. Another good thing is all the noticeable names and all the world records. To me there seems to be less world records in the winter olympics.
ReplyDeleteI disagree with Mr. Strykowski. I disagree because the events are often times postponed due to the weather and course conditions. Also, the winter olympics are dangerous. Many people are breaking bones and one person died this past weekend. I believe the summer olympics are more enjoyable.
ReplyDeletei think that the summer olympics are better than the winter olympics. I like watching basketball and softball. I believe that the atheletes in the Summer Olympics are more capable to show off their athletic prowess becuase of the warmer climate.
ReplyDeleteI disagree with Shaun because i do not like watching the USA team because they seem to let anyone one the team these days(i.e. Lebron James).
ReplyDeletei agree with Mason because I think the more watched sports are played during the Summer Olympics. They are more interesting and easier to relate too.
ReplyDeletei agree with Mr.Strykowski. atleast someone has some sense here. They are way more exciting to watch and everyone can do the ordinary summer olympics, not everyone can perform the winter olympic events, because they require more talent.
ReplyDeletei disagree with Mason, it doesnt matter if the sports are popular, its SUPERIORITY. and obviously that goes to the winter olympics hands down. And the summer olympics are not more interesting, they're boring because they are all ordinary sports.
ReplyDeletei disagree with mitchell. i like the winter olympics. they're more challenging than the regular summer olympics. figure skating (flips, spins, posing, etc), luge, competitive snowboarding, etc. we see basketball all the time here. it gets repetitive. i'd like to see pros jumping off of ramps 200 feet off the ground and do a crazy trick to keep me entertained.
ReplyDeleteI agree with with Joey. The winter olympics are more better because the sports are unusual. Unusual things are exciting. They appeal more to people. Or at least, they do to me. Mackenzie is definately right. Summer olympic sports are normal sports... Roncalli has a swim team along with track and many of the other sports played during the summer olympics. The winter olympic sports are exhilarating. They are a lot more entertaining because of their unusual-ness and the thrill caused by this unusual-ness.
ReplyDeleteI think that the Summer Olympics are better than than the Winter Olympics. The summer Olympics are just all around more fun to watch. There are many more exciting events than the winter Olympics. I really only like watching Shaun White in the snowboard halfpipe. The other events are basically track events on snow.
ReplyDeletei would have to agree with brendan on this subject. he mentioned that he only wanted to see one event from the winter Olympics and he also agrees that the summer Olympics are better. there are just more diversity in the events in the summer Olympics.
ReplyDeletei agree with Mason because I think the more watched sports are played during the Summer Olympics. more people participate in events like swimming and track and field and can easily relate to the athletes. football players tend to watch football more than other sports and it is the same with the summer Olympics.
ReplyDeleteI think that the summer olympics are better because the sports are way cooler. For example: beach volleyball. Its so intense and awsome i enjoy watching it more than watching figure skating or something boring like that.
ReplyDeletei agree with taylor when she says that the summer olympics are better because kids in school can actually have a better chance of watching the events rather than staying up and watching it when most of us have homework and stuff to do.
ReplyDeletei disagree with mackenzie. the summer olympics have difficult sports to like judo, wrestling and wheight lifting. in these u need very good technique. oh and table tennis that stuff is tuff and intense.
ReplyDeleteSummer is superior because i hate snow and the winter all together. I never go out there and skate on the ice or ski, i go out and play basketball and swim.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Jake the summer Olympics are superior because it is more exciting and its just a more fun time.
ReplyDeleteI disagree with Mackenzie the summer is superior. The summer shows more talent and more athleticism. Thats something the winter games lacks.
ReplyDelete
