The big controversy this week seems to be the decisions being made by school systems across the area as to whether or not to hold classes the day after the Superbowl. The Archdiocese of Indianapolis has announced that all schools will be closed...

Indianapolis Public Schools has announced that they will have a two-hour delay to try and avoid the transportation problems that they experienced after the Superbowl in 2007...

Other school systems are still trying to decide what the proper decision is. People in favor of the cancellations / delays state that this is an opportunity for families to spend quality time together, celebrating the team's / city's success and enjoying each other's company during a time when most of us seem too busy to do just that. People who are against the cancellations / delays argue that teachers are already crunched for time as it is to try and get through all of the necessary information in their classes and that doing something like this simply sends the wrong message to children (i.e. that sports are more important than education).
What is the right / proper decision? Is there really a right and wrong decision here? Is completely closing schools on Monday a good use of resources, or is a two hour delay more appropriate? (due 2/7)

I think that it is the right decision to not hold classes the day after the Superbowl because people will be having giant parties. If they did have school the kids and parents wouldnt be in any position to get their kids or themselves to work or school. THey would be tired and wouldnt be able to function correctly. I think that it is a good thing because the last year we were in the Superbowl tons of bus drivers didnt even show up to take kids to school
ReplyDeleteI believe that it is the right decision not to hold classes the day after the Superbowl. If you remember the last time we were in the Superbowl, everybody and their sister stayed up for the game. No body was ready for a bedtime at 8 or 9. Even though the game did not go very late, everybody was celebrating and hyped up on sugar that no one wanted to go to sleep. And even if you have school on Monday, you will like bus drivers, students, teachers, and others not going to school. That is why the IPS has issued a 2 hour delay because of the amount of bus drivers that called in sick the next day. I believe that a two hour delay would be sufficient but i like the full day off instead because of the fact that i get to sleep in.
ReplyDeleteI think that Indiana schools should not have classes because I think a lot of parents would probably keep their kids at home the next day anyway. The Superbowl is one of the most watched television programs in the nation, especially when your team finally gets to play in it. A lot of families are going to be throwing huge parties to celebrate and they are probably going to be staying up late. I think one day off out of the school year isn't a big deal, especially since it can be made up. However, I do think this sends the wrong message, that sports are more important than school, but I think that since a lot of parents would rather just have their kids stay home instead of complaining that they're too tired and doing poorly in school the next day, that no school on monday is absolutely a good thing.
ReplyDeleteI understand why people would want to keep the kids in school, but it's only one day. Yes we should put education first before sports, but yet we have to think about the fact that students put a lot of effort in their future and deserve a break. And like i said it's only one extra day. Just add a day to the end of the year to make up for it. People are making too big of a deal about it. And the reason that IPS is having a 2 hour delay is because the bus drivers call in sick the day after. They don't even want to do their job. Students know that school and their education is important, but pushing them too is going to make them not care.
ReplyDeleteI believe this is the right decision; to let the students have the day off. The reason I think this is because most students will end stay up later than they normally do on a normal day. The students at an IPS school is a little different. There are bus drivers that may have the aftereffects of a party the night before. Having the day off would prevent a tragedy and a two hour delay would help students and employees to get into their regular routine.
ReplyDeleteI think the schools should cancel classes for Monday. The Super Bowl is always one of the most watched television events of the year. Even if school is in session, it is likely that there could be low attendance atleast in the morning. Some parents will allow their kids to sleep in so they can watch the entire game. Closing school is the right decision.
ReplyDeleteI believe that this is definitely the right decision to cancel classes the day after the Superbowl. I believe that the day after the superbowl should become a national holiday and everyone should have off work and school regardless of the teams in the superbowl. The fact of the matter is that the superbowl is the biggest event of each year. No matter who you are or how much you like football, you will most likely stay up to watch the superbowl. Its just a way of life in America almost. Even if all schools were in session the day after the big game, most children, teachers, and bus drivers would probably not show up or just show up later in the day. It is the right decision to give everyone the day off and have no one fall behind and let the city celebrate and enjoy the moment.
ReplyDeleteI think it's the right decision to have the Monday off after the Super Bowl for a couple of reasons. For one, most of Indiana is going to stay up and watch the game which ends around 11. I think we should have the day off to celebrate our teams acomplishments and success. Regardless, we still have to make the day up so why does it matter if we miss Monday any more than missing a day of school because of snow or a Holiday.
ReplyDeleteI think that it is the right decision to not have school after the Superbowl. It is obvious that everyone will be watching the game, and not to mention it is a late game, which entails all kids being up later than normal for a Sunday night. We should have it off so we can, as a city, celebrate their accomplishments. If the kids were to go to school, then more than likely they will be unattentive and to tired to funtion properly for a school environment. One day off isn't going to hurt, while we aren't in school, most kids are doing school work the majority of the time out. So, it's not like a wasted day.
ReplyDeleteI think it is the right decision to have the day off after the super bowl. I believe this because everybody will be up late and will be tired the next morning. If they had to go to school most people would be sleeping because they are tired. Having off the day after the super bowl also allows students to enjoy the game more.
ReplyDeleteI don't agree that schools are cancelled the Monday after Super Bowl; a two hour delay would be fine because people could sleep in a little. The game isn't on that late and even if people stay up to visit friends and family and party, it's not likely that it would be that much later than when they would usually go to bed on a SUnday. I'm glad we have the day off, but a 2 hr. delay would have been fine too.
ReplyDeleteI think that it is a good idea for school to be canceled due to the excitement from the previous day. It does send the wrong message that sports are more important than education, but it doesn't harm anything. Everyone stays up late and is extremely tired from watching the Super Bowl, and going to Super Bowl parties. By having the day off or delayed, the kids are given a chance to sleep in, and be more prepared for school and less tired. So, overall, I don't think that it is a bad decision.
ReplyDeleteI think the right decision is to give a day off. This is right because many students would call in sick anyways. I do believe though that we should make the day up. It does not send a message that sports is more important than school. It would just be smart to give schools the day off to avoid everyone calling in sick
ReplyDeleteI think letting the students be out of school on the Monday after the Super Bowl was a good choice. If we had won, we would have been up late celebrating. Since we lost, the Monday off gave us a chance to express our disappoint and get over it... Instead of having a majority of students calling in sick because they were up late, they just had the day off. On the otherhand, it was kind of like saying sports are more important than school. In retaliation, it is the Super Bowl and the excitement of the Colts making it that far was definately worth it.
ReplyDeletei agree with the idea that spending quality time together as friends and family on a day that most people dread as the worst day of the week is a good thing. aren't emotional and meaningful relationships more important than anything? with those relationships comes happiness. even if the Colts lost, we still are able to boo them with people we care about. :)
ReplyDeletei think that the right decision is to not hold classes bacause the indianapolis deserves it we support our team so much and i think we all deserve a day off for all of our hard work and dedication to the team.
ReplyDeleteI think shutting down the schools would be appropriate in this situation. Look at the fact that everyone watched this and that we all were dead for the next half of the day. It also is to support our city's team so i feel that it is okay to close the school for the next day.
