Last week, Governor Daniels gave his "State of the State" address. In it, he made reference to the fact that financially, Indiana is in much better off than any of our neighboring states, and better than the national average.

Despite this being the case, he has still called for budget cuts "across the board" to government agencies. This includes cutting funding to public schools by approximately 3.5%.

If the state really is in a much better position than our neighbors, are these budget cuts really necessary? Should schools be forced to learn to live with less as these other government agencies will have to, or should they be exempt? (due 1/31)

I do believe these budget cuts are necessary. I believe this because schools spend money like it grows on trees and they need to be more cautious with the money. Schools think they can build anything they want and theres not much money for other funding. I think they should take the money with the budget cuts and help the unemployed people.
ReplyDeleteI think that the budget cuts are still necessary because despite us being better than other states we are still in an economic recession. The schools seem to be doing fine without the increased budgets. Schools can still teach there students without buying them expensive gyms and pools. If the schools didnt spend all their money on these espensive and not necessary things these schools can still do their job of teaching these kids. The schools shouldnt complain because of the budget cuts. THe money they receive should go to the students and nowhere else.
ReplyDeleteYes, I believe these budget cuts are necessary. The reason I believe this is because even though we are in a better shape than others, we can still lower our state average. With these budget cuts, we are able to maintain and control the economy a little bit more at a time. The money should already go towards the students and supplies to the people that need it.
ReplyDeleteI believe the budget cuts are necessary, and even if we are in better position than other states there is still economic crisis here, maybe not as bad as some states, but it still exists.Schools are always spending money, so schools shouldn't be exempt from the budget cuts. Everyone has to do their part in the recession to make it easier on everybody.
ReplyDeleteI believe the budget cuts are necessary. A school is not different than a government agency. A school and an agency both help out people and both should pay the same amount. Yes, schools are important but a school can adept as they need with what they have. Schools used to have to adept, but they they started to get money to build different things, but why cant a school go back to what htey used to have to do. Also the money will help keep the tax payers happy and not mad.
ReplyDeleteYes, I believe that the intended budget cuts are absolutely necessary. The money not being wasted on the schools could go towards better causes. Coming from a Catholic school, I know that the school can find ways to make it by just fine without government funding. A lot a public schools receive a lot of things that they don't even need, such as recording studios in elementary schools. The money could go to more useful causes in the community.
ReplyDeleteI think that if budget cuts are really needed then yes they are necessary. The money that's not in use should be used for something that everyone would benefit from. The schools don't necessary need all that money that they have because some of it could be used for something else that could help out our community. Yes schools are important and should be cared for, but yet all our money should go to other things besides that.
ReplyDeleteI think the budget cuts are necessary. As Gavin said, although we are in realtively good shape, we are still in a recession. The government authorities will not let schools go without what they need. The governor has made it obvious that education is a priority. This shows that Daniels is going to do what he can to maintain good education. If there is a need for a bigger budget in the future, Daniels will make sure the right steps are taken for a good school system.
ReplyDeleteI do belive that budget cuts are nessary. I belive this because although other we a doing better than a lot of states that still doent mean that were not sruggling through these tough economic times. everyone that works for the state is going to have struggle through these ressesion and even schools. As long as the children are geting the propper education they need for later in life than temporary cuts can be made to help that state remain better than other states.
ReplyDeleteyes, the cuts are necessary. Though we may be doing better than our neighboring states, this does not mean we are doing well enough not to have budget cuts. Because whether we like it or not, we are still in this recession. The budget cuts for public schools are perfectly fine. I believe that as long as they are giving the kids the main supplies they need for schooling, and the education, then cuts for extra things can be made. I mean the governor will make the right decisions on what to cut in the public schools, and the public schools will be fine, but they will have to learn to be more resourceful than wasteful in the tough times that we are in.
ReplyDeleteYes, I think that the budget cuts are necessary. Even if Governor Daniels said that we are doing better than other states, it is still important to spend money wisely. I think that public schools will be just fine with the budget cuts. If anything, it will teach them to be more frugal with the money the spend. So, maybe the cuts will allow the public schools to see what they need to spend money on and what isn't really necessary for the school to thrive. The budget cuts can be a positive thing for the state, and in the long run for the schools too.
ReplyDeleteI think that the budget cuts for schools are encessary because like Shaun said, the schools spend money like it grows on trees. Public schools believe that they can just ask for more and more money but where would the money come from? It comes from everybody's taxes and the reserves that the state has. The schools don't really need the money. The students can use a textbook for several years instead of replacing or updating them every single year. The money we have in our budgets should used wisely.
ReplyDeleteI believe budget cuts are necessary because even though Indiana is doing well, the nation as a whole is still in a recession. Schools need to understand the difference between necessary and unnecessary utilities. It seems that too many schools are purchasing items that are not necessary to a good education. Adminstrators need to understand the importance of conserving money for more important issues.
ReplyDeleteI believe the budget cuts are necessary. Indiana maybe doing better than the other states but it's still in an economic downfall. That 3.5% budget cut won't take away from the mandatory items the school needs to properly teach their student's. If that was the case they wouldn't have cut the budget. I believe it's fine to cut the budget because it's not going to really affect the school. The school will still have the money to buy the books, supplies, etc. to properly give their student's the best possible education as possible.
ReplyDeletei believe we should live with these budget cuts as well. If were doing fine with our schools education and our situation is better than most states, then why change? We should learn to live with what we got in order to keep our state where it is, which is better than most in this struggling economy. Schools dont need the extra bit, they just need to learn what is necessary and what is not necessary when it comes to their educational resources.
ReplyDeleteI believe that these budget cuts are necesary b. I think this because the state needs all the extra money it can get, because we do not know when the economy will turn arounf. Schools should not be exempt from cutting back. Schools need to learn to live with what they have intsead of demanding more from the government
ReplyDeletethey budget cuts are necessary. as much help to the country's economy as possible is always good enough. it's not as though the individual states that make decisions like this and do better because of them are going to be prosperous and other states are still going to fail. there can be a bleeding effect with jobs. businesses will expand and have to move to other states. it goes on from there, as long as it works.
ReplyDeleteYes i do believe that these bugget guts are appropriate because even though we are doing better than other states we are still below our states average. Schools need to learn to deal with these cuts they will pull through.
ReplyDeleteYes i feel that the budget cuts are necessary. Just becasue we are doing better doesnt mean we are good, it jsut means we are doing better. There still is a ways to go before we get out of this recession and until so we need to do stuff like this to keep our economy in line.
